Networking. Want Results? Do the Work!

January 25, 2012

I admit I do a fair amount of networking online, but tonight I set aside a couple of hours in my usual “hanging with my family and homework” Tuesday night schedule to attend  a Sales, Marketing & Networking event organized by the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce. It was held at the Buffalo Club Bar & Grill, a popular night-out destination for locals and one of my fave date night locations with my hubby (which reminds me, I believe this Saturday night is date night – one of our 2012 resolutions).

I’m not usually a fan of heading to networking events solo, but for some reason, I didn’t feel the need to pick up the phone and find a date for this particular event. I think it was the guest speakers that caught my attention. I was really looking forward to hearing and meeting Lucie Woods, the CEO of SalesPartners British Columbia, and Patrick von Pander, owner of The Big Picture Coach.

Upon my arrival, about 50 people were mingling  about in the cozy fireside room. The room abuzz with handshakes and business card exchanges (yep, for those wondering….people are still using business cards and an important item if you want in on the biz card prize draw).

Patrick was up first to present his tried and true “Top 10 Ways to Work a Room.” His print collateral mentions that he has worked with 1,000+ businesses, corporations and organizations so it was time to listen up! I felt pretty good when he shared that it’s common for people to feel anxious when attending networking events. For natural introverts like me, his tip to stop and scan the room before entering to allow others to see me is brilliant. But the thought of “What if nobody sees me?” still lingers in my mind. I’ll just have to trust Patrick on this one (reminding myself he has worked with 1000+ companies). He also mentioned that you need to act as if you belong at the event. A simple idea that makes sense. We are all at the event for the same reason – to meet new people.  Patrick ended his presentation by sharing what to do with all of the business cards you collect after the event. He recommends that your first follow-up should take place within 24 hours. And in case you’re wondering, wrapping an elastic band around them and placing them in your  top drawer until you need a particular product or service, isn’t an effective form of follow-up. Instead, you may want to try picking up the phone, emailing, sending a nice-to-meet-you card or a handy resource.

Lucie was up next to talk to us about the “Sales Process.” She engaged the group by asking them to fill in the blank. Selling requires __________. If you guessed persistence or a lot of work you’re on the right track. The correct answer is “ENERGY.” Selling is constant and it’s important that corporations teach their sales teams how to sell. After all, it is a process. I especially liked Lucie’s “Three E’s.” Everything sell, Everyone sell, Every interaction sell. This is now pinned on my cork board. As a biz owner, this is important stuff which I fully admit, don’t do well. It’s evident that Lucie is in the right line of work. Her presentation style is energetic, engaging, and for me, inspiring.

Reflecting on my evening, I’ve come to the conclusion that a few hours away from my family was definitely worth it – worth it if I’m willing to do the work. If I want to grow my business and increase my connections, like any other business owner,  I don’t really have a choice. I’ve been fortunate with my business to date and grateful for my handful of repeat clients. Six Degrees will be celebrating its 5 Year Anniversary this February and I have decided that it’s time grow the business and have fun doing it. So, if we shook hands at the event and exchanged a business card, expect to hear from me (if you haven’t already). And for those I didn’t get a chance to meet, I will seek you out at the next event. I believe the Chamber has a speed networking event planned for February 21. I’ve never been to a speed networking event, but it definitely sounds like fun! I’m up for it. How ‘ bout you?

A big thank-you to Jesse and Carrisa of the Chamber for organizing the event, Patrick and Lucie for your knowledge and guidance, and the Buffalo Club for your fab space, drinks and food.

I’d love to hear from others about their networking and sales tips. Please feel free to leave a comment or link below.

Cheers to growing your business!

Lori
